 Julie

"Julie, we had a promise, do you remember?” Christopher murttered to a picture he was holding. A beautiful young girl was smiling in the yellowish picture. The man  tightened his hold on the picture, then his hand turned icy cold.

The next day Christopher’s nephew, who was 16 years old went visit him with his father, only did found the old man dead on a chair by the window.

Oliver was in shock, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. All of a sudden his loving uncle was dead. He realized there was an old photo in Christopher’s hand, he gently took it out and put it into his shirt pocket.

“Oliver, come see what I found.” said Oliver’s father, Malachy.

His father’s voice drag him back to reality. Slowly he walked to where his father stood.

In the brown envolop was Christopher’s will, a letter, and a sapphire necklace. It was the most beautiful thing Oliver ever seen, it was dazzling in the sunlight, changing from bright blue to deep blue as he twisted it in his hand. His father read the will out loud.

This is the will of Christopher Sheehan:

I leave my house and money to my dearest brother Malachy Sheehan. since I have no children and family, and I’m sure my brother will take good care of my things.

I leave my garden to my belove nephew, Oliver Sheehan. I know you love to play there since you were small, I love your amazing smile on your face when you’re playing.

I leave this sapphire nacklace and letter to my only love Julie Butterfield. Please help me find her and give it to her. For my poor soul can’t fly free without knowing she is well, whereever she is.

                                         SINCERELY

                                         2011.12.03

                                        Christopher Sheehan

Two days after they held Christopher’s funeral. It was raining heavily that day. and as Oliver stood there in the cold rain, Watching the workers dig his uncle’s grave. He cried. First time in three days.

After the funeral ended they went back to Christopher’s old house to sort out his things.

Oliver went into his uncle’s study, when he was little he used to sit on his uncle’s lap and asked him to tell stories when he came to visit.

His uncle was like a second father to him. His own mother died giving birth to him, his dad seldom speak of his mother. He knows that the memories make him sad, because one time he got home from school early and found his dad lholding Mom’s favorite shirt, and he was crying. He never saw his father cry. Except for that day.

Oliver walked over to a cabinet his uncle never let him open. He felt guilty opening it, but his curiousity won and with his hands shaking, he opened it.

A huge pile of papers came rushing out of their wooden prison. Then Oliver realized they weren’t just papers. They were letters. Hundreds of letters. On every envolop wrote the same name: Julie.

Suddenly Oliver saw something different. Half buried in the pile of letters, was a thick notebook. Uncle Christopher’s diary, Oliver thought.

He picked it up and turned a page.

                                                                                                     July 1st, 1978

    Dear Diary:

I finally succeeded on asking Julie to date me. On the day I turn seventeen!! I really don’t know how to tell you how happy I am!!

We’re going to THAT place! Can you believe it? I am going to show her my favorite view from the highest hill, and pick her flower from my own little garden in the forest!

Can’t wait to go out with her!

                                                           CHRIS

Oliver tried to imagine his uncle, as young as him. Daydreaming and trying to get girls to date him. It was so funny that he smiled.

“Oliver.” His dad Malachy called from the room next to the study.

“Coming, dad.” he replied andran into the room, almost bumped into his dad.

"I found this in your uncle’s room.” his father told him, holding up an album. Oliver looked through the pages. Almost all the photoes inside are the same girl as the photo in Christopher’s hand.

“Is the girl Julie?” Oliver asked.

“Yes, she is...”Malachy answered. His voice was sad, Oliver didn’t know why, but he guess the girl was very popular.

“Father, I don’t know what you think, but I’m going to find this Julie girl for uncle Christopher.”Oliver said with firm, taking the picture he took from his uncle out from his pocket. “I think this girl is really very important to him. He was holding this when he died. “

“This is Julie, his first girlfriend, I remember her. She was a sweet and nice girl, always smiling. That girl had such amazing smile.”

“Well, dad. I’m going to find her, will you help me?”

“When you need help, just ask.” Malachy replied with a gentle smile on his face.

Of course he will help Oliver. He is his only son and just looking at the boy reminded him of his dead wife.(He likes to say ‘wife’ although  hey weren’t really married. )The same golden brown hair and sea green eyes, the same warm smile. Oliver was all that he have in this world, he will help him whatever it takes.

“Wow, this place is HUGE! Where am I going to start looking?” Oliver kept biting his pencil tail as he read the map.

“I suppose we should go to places that have hills.” his dad said, snatching the map out of his hands. “I remember the place where my brother and I went very often when we were young. That was a beautiful hillside, with the sun shines bright and warm, birds singing and hopping on branches, butterflies and bees flying around, and there’s even some amazing wild animals living there.”

“Is that the place where he first dated Julie?” Oliver asked.

“ I think so...That day he went home, he was so  happy.” Malachy scrached his head, trying to recall, “I think it was....his 17or18 years old birthday. He ran into my room , yelling ‘Malachy! Little brother! I got it, I got Julie to date me!I’m going to take her to our place, she would like it very much.’ We even ordered a pizza to celebrate that night.”

“Then why did she leave? She didn’t like to be with uncle Christopher?”Oliver asked, confused.

“No one knows. They had two real happy years together, then the girl just dissapeared. Christopher was so sad, but he couldn’t find his girl .”

“Well I suppose he never forgot her...”Oliver said, gestured to all those photos and letters.

Two days later Oliver went to the hill with his father.  The necklace was on his nack and the letter in his pocket. The place really was beautiful.

“Dad, can you leave me here? I’ll come home before dinner.” Oliver pleaded, he wanted to take a nice walk here and think.

“...Okay, be safe, if you have any problem just call me.”Malachy sounded worried, but he headed down the hilltop.

He walked through the forest. looking through a wad of photos’this place is got to be important, it’s the place where they dated!’ he thought.

He walked and walked, but he couldn’t think of anything. It was already late afternoon, and he had found nothing.

Then he saw an apple tree. On the branches are full of apple flowers. ‘Strange,’ he thought , ‘It’s the middle of May. I’m quite sure it wasn’t apple’s producing season.’ He strolled around the tree, took out the sapphire necklace and ran his fingers through the smoothy surface.

All of a sudden he heard a gentle laughter. He  looked  up and saw a girl sitting on the branch of the apple tree, reaching out a hand to touch the flower. Then he realized in shock that this girl is Julie. She looks so real but somehow he knew she wasn’t. She was wearing a pretty dress the same color as the apple flowers.

He looked at the pictures he was holding,  and , yes , it couldn’t be wrong. It  was the same apple tree, also full of flowers. In the picture Julie was dancing in front of it in the sunlight. Laughing like it was the best day in her life.

He looked up again and found Julie was smiling down at him.

“Are...Are you real?” Oliver was not yet recovered from the shock.

“Well, you can say I’m here..., and not here.”Julie replied. Her voice was gentle and happy. And she still looks like the young 16 yeared- old girl in the photos. Which kind of freaked Oliver out.

“Why did you left Uncle Christopher? I know you love him.” Oliver asked, curious.

“Oliver, I left him because of ...you.”Julie said, staring at the ground.

    “Wh...What do you mean?”

“Oliver, I...I’m your mother...” Julie lifted her head. And from the pain in her green eyes, Oliver knew she was telling the truth. Her eyes and hair... the first time did he noticed. They were the same shape and color as his.

“I couldn’t forgive myself, so I left Christopher, which is your uncle.” Julie said with sorrow in her voice, “Maybe died giving birth to you was the debt I should pay. I own Christopher so much. But you must understand, I did love Christopher, but... I loved your father, too. The two of them have the same good heart.”

Oliver was too stunned to speak. Julie, his uncle’s lover...was his mother...

    “Did...did my father knows?”

“No. Both of us didn’t know at the beginning.  When I met him , he was  so nice to me. At first we just met each other in the coffee shop and chat. He was such a great friend. But after some days we couldn’t hide our feelings anymore.” Julie explaned.

“ When he found out the truth he was so shocked. He said he still loves me but he could’t let Christopher know. So we burned every photo and every letter. That’s why your dad doesn’t have any photos. We kept the secret very well. Christopher didn’t even know where my grave is. Malachy buried me secretly, but he still buys flower for me every week, just like the time we were together.” Julie smiled, and Oliver had to admit. That was the best smile he’ve ever seen.

Julie reached out to him, when her hand touched his face he didn’t flinch. Her touch was so warm and gentle. He didn’t want her to let go .

“I can’t stay long, Christopher must be waiting for me, I will explan everything to him.Tell your dad hello for me. And remember, your mother loves you and will always watches over you.” Julie smiled and start vanishing.

“Wait! My uncle wants to give these to you.”Oliver yelled, holding up the necklace and letter.”

“Thank you , Oliver. But I want you to keep the sapphire necklace. I do not deserve such a present. Keep it by your side, as a gift from your mother.”she took the letter and vanished into the night sky.

“I love you , too...Mom.” Oliver whispered, still holding the necklace.

He could swear he heard Julie’s voice saying “Thanks, Oliver, for not hating me...you have the same good heart as your father. Tell him I love him.”

Still stunned. He walked back home.

When he opened the door he found his dad sitting on the sofa, waiting for him to come home.

He went over and give his dad a hug, he hasn’t do that in years.

“You found the answer you seek?”Malachy asked gently.

“Yes, dad.”tears were streaming down his cheek, he had seen too much in one day.

“Do you hate for betraying my own brother? for not telling you the truth?”

“No, dad. I know you love me, and I love you, too.”

    “So you met your mother?”

“Yeah,I met her at the apple tree in the forest.”

“She loved that tree, you know. We used to spend our afternoons there.”Malachy said, recalling the beautiful young girl.

“Did she said anything?”Malachy asked .

“She told me to say hello to you, dad.”Oliver replied.” And she said she loves you.”

Malachy smiled, “Your mother’s just like that. I would never forget her, never.”
